How to Make the Most of Your Piano Lessons: Advice for Students and Parents

Learning the piano can have a big impact on a child’s development.

Reading and playing music helps children develop their speech, motor and cognitive skills, and can boost their self-esteem and give them a way to express themselves.

Learning to play the piano is a fun process, but it can sometimes be a struggle to persevere and get the most out of lessons.

Your piano teacher in Auckland can do a lot, but there are many things that students and parents can do to make the most of piano lessons.

Buy a piano or keyboard for home

Practice is essential to learning the piano, so to help your child get the most out of their lessons you should strongly consider buying a piano or keyboard at home.

Ideally, you’ll want to buy an instrument that’s similar to the ones your child will be using at the Music Education Centre.

If you’re buying a keyboard, make sure that it has weighted keys and is not smaller than the piano used in lessons. A keyboard that is too different will lead to frustration and can reduce the benefits of practising.

Get involved

The more a parent gets involved with their child’s piano practice, the easier it will be.

While it might be difficult to find the time to practise with your child, try and get involved as often as you can.

Having a parent practice with them will make it more enjoyable, and you’ll be able to help them out if they get stuck.

Record lessons

For students, recording your lesson (with your teacher’s permission) will help you recall all of the key points.

Once home, you can review these lessons, which can help you better absorb everything you were taught as well as listen to particular passages to ensure that you’re practising them correctly.

Be punctual

It’s a good idea to get to your lesson about 10 minutes before it starts.

Rushing into a lesson will make it more difficult to focus and wastes valuable lesson time. Arriving with plenty of time to spare gives you a chance to relax, get settled in and have everything ready to go when the teacher arrives.
