Unlocking Musical Potential: How to Decide on the Right Instrument for Your Child

As Shakespeare once wrote in ‘Twelfth Night’, if music be the food of love, play on. Though a quote from centuries ago, it still rings true today that music is truly what gives our lives meaning. Many of us carry fond memories of playing with friends in music classes, but how did we decide which instrument was right for us?

Well, mainly it was instinct having tried a few instruments along the way to decide. From piano lessons to drum lessons, it was primarily about which instrument gave us the thrill. Perhaps it’s instinctive, perhaps it needs to be trained, but each of us who began our musical journey felt in tune with a certain instrument somewhere down the line.

What could it be for your child? Well, whether it’s drum lessons, violin lessons, a guitar teacher, or anything in between, Music Education provides the best start for children to get into the world of music. We cater for those at the start of their journey, as well as older age groups - after all, it’s never too late, nor too early.

What is the right instrument for my child?

Unlocking that hidden potential can be an exciting process in itself, as you discover what your child is passionate about. Is your child drawn to a specific instrument? Are there others worth trying? Even factors such as hand size or breath capacity could influence the decision in some way.

Maybe your child already has the instrument, which conveniently for you could be the cheapest - their voice. Whatever they decide, they’ll need your support every step of the way in order to feel confident within themselves.

Above all, embrace the challenge. There will be frustrations along the road, especially with something that requires deft fingers like guitar or piano, but the satisfaction of getting something right after endless practice is like nothing else.

If your child is ready to embark on their musical journey, then head to the Music Education Centre for further information on how you can begin that journey. We can even help you choose your instrument if you’re struggling to decide.
