When should you introduce your child to learning a musical instrument?

Trombone Student Auckland

Music teachers in Auckland teach countless children each year how to master a musical instrument of their choosing. But, these children all start to learn at different ages! This begs the important question for parents wanting their child to start this wonderful hobby; when should you introduce your child to learning a musical instrument? Find out more, below.

It’s not always as simple as ‘as soon as possible..’

Some teachers recommend placing your child in music lessons as soon as they show a particular interest in an instrument – like piano, for example. But, putting your child into lessons ‘as soon as possible’ isn’t always the right thing to do.

We recommend that your child starts learning a musical instrument when they can focus on a single task for 25 minutes, which would be at 5-years-old. This ensures that your child enjoys and gets the most out of their lessons! Yet, we always recommend being careful. If you introduce your little one to music lessons too soon – which can be quite intimidating for a tot! – they may lose their passion for musical instruments altogether.

If your child seems a little overwhelmed with structured music lessons at 5-years-old, here’s what you should do:

Roll back on all the formalities

Roll back on some of the rigid formalities of a structured music lesson, and give your child a little breathing room to develop their own music tastes, and adjust to handling a musical instrument. Their excitement is sure to reignite!

Surround them with music

It’s important to surround your child with different rhythms and melodies, not only to assist in their learning of a musical instrument, but to give them a genuine joy and appreciation of music. If a child truly wants to learn how to replicate all of this music with their own instrument, they’re more likely to keep at it in future.

Give your child freedom

If you’d prefer your child to be a classical pianist but they want to be a drummer, give your child the freedom to choose their own musical instrument! Music, in the end, is all about heart and passion. A child playing an instrument they love will give it their all.

Find them the right teacher
